5 Comments for Emma
I have seen lots of Emmas and this is my least favorite. If I weren’t such a Jane Austen fan, this would have been worse.
Rating: 3 / 5
I enjoyed all the characters except the main character. She came across as mean spirited, bigoted, immature and self-centered. There was nothing “heroic” about this heroine. The ending was nice but not sufficiently developed.
After seeing (and thoroughly enjoying Pride and Prejudice), my expectations were great.
I was disappointed — not so much with the adaptation but with the character development. There was little that was likable about this characer. Maybe if this was a 2 dvd set as was Pride and Prejudice, the more positive characteristics of Emma would have been better developed and exhibited.
This was a pale “copy” of Pride and Prejudice or even Sense and Sensabilty.
Now, I’ll be forced to view GP’s version.

I saw Gwyteth Paltrows version of Emma first, and this movie did not live up to it at all. Kate Beckinsale was marvoulous as Hero in “Much Ado About Nothing”, but in this movie she makes Emma seem nasty. Harriet was a little waif, Frank Churchill was to flirty (Ewan McGregor did a much better job), and Mr. Knightly was constantly angry with Emma. You never got a chance to fall in love with him like you can in Gwyneth Paltrows version. The costumes, sets and music are pretty bad, too.

The characters look very bad, especially Emma. Kate Beckinsale is NOT beautiful and even looks evil. How can she portray the extraordinarily beautiful and lovable Emma Woodhouse? Also, the actor who plays Mr. Knightley doesn’t look right. He doesn’t really look like a noble, intelligent, and warm-hearted gentleman, which Georget Knightley should be. Frank Churchill doesn’t look good and young enough, either. In my opinion, if the characters do not look right, nothing can be right.
